Calgary roofing is hail roofing
Calgary sits in the middle of what forecasters call Hailstorm Alley, the stretch of Alberta where warm prairie air meets cooler air off the Rockies and builds tall storm cells. Since 2020 the city has had four storms that each caused hundreds of millions to billions of dollars in insured damage. Each one tracked across a different part of town:
- June 13, 2020: the northeast, especially Saddle Ridge, Taradale, Skyview Ranch and Redstone.
- July 2, 2021: hail and flash flooding, mostly in the south.
- August 5, 2024: the north, from Evanston and Sage Hill in the northwest to the northeast and the airport.
- July 13, 2025: a track just south of the 2024 storm, per CatIQ.
So if your roof has been “fine” since you bought the house, it may simply not have been checked. Our Calgary hail storm history lists every major storm with sources.
Calgary roofs we work on
1990s to 2010s suburbs. Most homes in communities like Panorama Hills, Tuscany, Cranston and McKenzie Towne were built with standard architectural or three-tab shingles. Many are on their first roof and at or past the age where hail damage turns into leaks.
Northeast homes on their second or third hail roof. In Saddle Ridge, Taradale and Redstone, many owners have re-roofed after 2020 and again after 2024. These are the homes where a Class 4 impact-resistant roof makes the most sense.
Inner-city character homes. Bridgeland, Mount Pleasant, Inglewood and similar neighbourhoods have older homes with plank decking, multiple layers and complex roof lines. Tear-off and deck work are the big variables, and we price them in writing.
Newer communities. Homes in Evanston, Sage Hill, Mahogany and Auburn Bay are often under 15 years old. Hail on a young roof can still mean a full replacement if the damage is widespread, and your policy should cover it at replacement cost.
Permits and rules in Calgary
The City of Calgary does not require a permit to replace roofing materials with similar materials. Switching to a different roofing type, such as clay tile, needs a building permit, as does any structural work. Some newer communities have architectural guidelines that restrict roof colours, so check before choosing a shingle.
Quadrant pages
We have dedicated pages for the two quadrants hit hardest in recent storms:
- Roofing in Northeast Calgary, where the 2020 and 2024 storms caused the heaviest siding and roof damage
- Roofing in Northwest Calgary, which took the brunt of the 2024 storm in communities like Evanston and Sage Hill
Southwest and southeast Calgary get the same service. Book a free hail roof inspection or call [403-XXX-XXXX].
