Where the 2024 storm came in
On the evening of August 5, 2024, a supercell formed in the foothills and moved east across Cochrane, reaching northwest Calgary at about 7:45 pm. Residents in Evanston, Sage Hill and nearby communities reported hail the size of golf balls to hen’s eggs, broken windows, stripped trees and flooded streets. The same storm went on to hit the northeast and the airport before moving toward Strathmore.
Less than a year later, the July 13, 2025 storm tracked across north Calgary again, just south of the 2024 path, according to CatIQ.
What northwest roofs look like after hail
Newer communities, young roofs. Evanston, Sage Hill, Kincora, Nolan Hill, Sherwood and Carrington were mostly built over the last 15 years. Young roofs hit by big hail are often full replacements, and depreciation is usually low, which works in your favour on a replacement-cost policy.
Architectural controls. Many of these communities have guidelines on roof colour and style. We confirm compliance before ordering materials.
Two-storey homes with large roof areas. Bigger, steeper roofs mean larger claims. We measure precisely and check that the estimate includes steep-pitch and high-roof labour.
Established neighbourhoods. Tuscany, Royal Oak, Edgemont, Hamptons and Varsity have homes from the 1970s to the 2000s, some on second roofs, some with skylights and low-slope sections that need special detailing.
If your roof hasn’t been inspected since 2024
Some northwest homeowners never filed after the 2024 storm because the roof looked fine from the street. Bruised shingles often look normal for a year or more before granule loss and leaks appear. If that is your situation:
- Book a free hail roof inspection so you have a dated record.
- If we find hail damage, call your insurer promptly and give them the storm date. Our claim guide covers deadlines.
- Keep the report even if you decide not to claim.
